Brainstorming for Hurston Prompt

Prompt: Compare Janie’s expectations of her three different men, Logan Killicks, Jodie Stark, and Tea Cake and how her expectations change for each.

Janie's Expectations:

As a child:

  • At 16, Janie's blossoms into her sexuality and believes that marriage is a long rode of beautiful and sensual love.
Logan Killicks:
  • Being and arranged marriage that Janie is resistant to, the impending marriage with Logan goes against everything Janie believed marriage would or should be like.
  • Since the marriage was arranged to simply gain money for Janie's family, she is not a fan that the lust is virtually non-existent.
Joe Stark:
  • Joe is a sweet talker who satisfies some of Janie's sexual desires. He suppresses her voice, but is very rich and supports her well. He ends up becoming a burden to Janie as they go through their marriage and he eventually dies leaving her a widow. She probably wanted that though.
Tea Cake:
  • Tea Cake comes along when Janie has been living a life of wealthiness for most of her life at this point. He presents a new sense of love that really recreates that excitement she felt that down while watching the pear tree. Even though her new life with him may not be luxurious, she sacrifices that in order to finally have that unstoppable feeling of love that she had always dreamed about since the age of 16.
