Outline for P&P Essay

Thesis: ?

Paragraph #1: Elizabeth + Mr. Collins (proposal)

- His proposal revealed man's assumption of authority of the time.
- Gender plays a major role in early 1800s in the process of courtship
- Simply assuming yes because that is how it worked
- Women had 1-2 chances because they receive and do not give proposals
- Women are slightly disempowered from saying no
- Men hold all the cards and Mr. Collins knows this

Paragraph #2: Elizabeth + Mr. Darcy

- Darcy tries resisting her because she is of a slightly lower class and would tarnish his image
- Caroline Bingley (who is on the same class) expects to marry Darcy, however, Darcy does not like her
- His social power and class majorly affect his courting of elizabeth
- Elizabeth initially dislikes him because she finds him snobbish, like most lower class people think of higher class peeps
- Elizabeth eventually warms up to him but he resists the temptation to commit to her because of his status

Paragraph #3: World Today

- While many social conventions from England in the early 1800s are out of date and no longer pertain to our world, we still keep some of the same.
- Women now have significantly more power over the relationship process
- Women's voice is completely empowered now, even if they may not usually ask the man for marriage
